Academic word list:

This website is based on an academic word list compiled by Averil Coxhead at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. It contains material concerning 570 word-families found in academic texts and is useful for anyone wanting to increase their vocabulary. There is also a series of podcasts concerning academic language and language quizzes. A useful site.

Academic phrase bank:

This website is from the University of Manchester and is a general resource for anyone who wants to master the ‘phraseological nuts and bolts’ of academic writing. For example, if you are in the process of defining the terms you use in your work, the site will provide you with a list of typical phrases used in this context. There is a wide variety of other usages which provides many phrases which you will find useful.

University of Massey

The University of Massey in New Zealand has comprehensive study support in their Online Writing and Learning Link. It provides help in different aspects of academic writing, referencing, study skills etc.

Purdie Writing Lab

Purdue University in the United States of America offers an online writing lab (OWL). For example, it includes referencing and avoiding plagiarism. There are also writing exercises and examples of subject-specific writing where you can find useful examples.

Using English for academic purposes

Using English for Academic Purposes for Students in Higher Education is a website with several subsections providing links on accuracy, skills, language, oral presentation, referencing, to name just a few.

Swedish examples

Several Swedish universities supply writing support. The library at the University of Skövde provides the following link from Brekinge Institute of Technology (BTH):

The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH) provides a Guide to Writing in English. This is comprehensive and includes sections such as, sentence structure, punctuation, writing conventions, referencing etc.

Online dictionaries

The four dictionaries listed here are all British dictionaries simply because they supply entries using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to enable you to read the pronunciation. More importantly, however, these dictionaries supply not only British pronunciation of the entries but also American pronunciation.
